How to Play Cornhole, It is played between two teams stationed at opposite platforms. Points are scored by landing bags on the platform (1 point) or through the hole (3 points). The first team to reach the score limit, typically 21 points, wins.
Setup:
- Use two cornhole boards placed 27 feet apart (front edge to front edge)
- Position the boards on a level surface
- Each board has a 6-inch diameter hole centered 9 inches from the top
- Players/teams take their positions at opposite boards
Gameplay:
- Divide into two teams of one or more players
- One player/team starts by throwing all 4 bags from one board toward the opposite board
- Players must remain behind the front edge of the board when pitching
- The other team takes their turn pitching all 4 bags
- After both teams have pitched, scoring takes place
Scoring:
- Bags remaining on the board = 1 point each
- Bags that went through the hole = 3 points each
- Cancel scoring – if each team has bags on the board and in the hole, the scoring cancels out
- Play continues until a team reaches the score limit (usually 21)
Other Rules:
- Players must pitch the bags with an underhand release
- Foot can cross the line on the release but not before
- Alternate pitchers after every 4 bags
- First team to score the agreed point total wins
The key is developing an accurate underhand pitch and being able to knock off your opponent’s bags while getting your own bags on the board or through the hole. It’s a fun backyard game for all ages!
