How to Build Cornhole Boards, Making your own cornhole boards requires some basic woodworking materials and tools. You’ll need two pieces of 3/4″ thick 24″x48″ plywood for the board tops, along with 2×4 lumber to build a frame around each plywood piece.
Materials Needed:
- 2 pieces of 3/4″ thick plywood, cut to 24″ x 48″ size
- 8-10 ft of 2×4 lumber for the frame
- 4″ hole saw or jigsaw to cut hole
- Sandpaper
- Wood glue
- Screws
- Primer and paint or wood sealant
Instructions:
- Cut the plywood to the regulation 24″x48″ size using a circular saw or have it cut at the hardware store.
- Cut the 2x4s to build a frame around the plywood pieces. The frame should have a flat front surface slightly oversized from the plywood. Assemble with wood glue and screws.
- Center and trace an 6″ diameter circle about 9″ from the top of each plywood piece. Cut out this hole using a 4″ hole saw or jigsaw.
- Sand both plywood pieces thoroughly to smooth any rough edges.
- Prime and paint the plywood tops and sides with exterior paint or apply a wood sealant on all surfaces. Let dry completely.
- Stand the boards on their frame and you’re ready to play! For maximum longevity, store inside when not in use.
Some additional tips:
- Consider mounting a strip of contrasting color wood around the hole for visibility.
- Add ergonomic hand holes on each end to make carrying easier.
- Apply non-slip foot pads on the bottom to prevent sliding.
Take your time on construction and finishing for attractive, regulation cornhole boards that will last. Have fun!
